Denali National Park is one of the best places in Alaska to see large mammals in their natural habitat. The park road traverses prime wildlife territory where animals are accustomed to — but never dependent on — human presence.
The Denali Big Five
- ✓Moose: Common along rivers and willow thickets, especially in early morning and evening.
- ✓Caribou: Herds graze open tundra; calving peaks in late May and June.
- ✓Dall sheep: White coats visible on rocky slopes above the road, particularly near Polychrome Pass.
- ✓Wolves: Elusive but regularly spotted by patient observers on deep-park bus routes.
- ✓Grizzly bears: Foraging on tundra and berry patches; most active in July through September.
Seasonal Patterns
Spring brings bears and migrating birds. Summer offers the highest overall sighting frequency. Autumn concentrates moose and bears near food sources before winter.
